The source of this rugged scenery lies not many steps from my front door–an old, dry, rotting tree stump. I was pretty sure I could do something with it.
As shot, it required little more than some careful trimming. Mostly the trick was just standing in the right place to capture the best view of the “terrain.” As Ansel Adams said, “A good photograph is knowing where to stand,” but of course he was talking about the likes of Yosemite, not tree stumps.
