part of an old log that resembles a snake head and body

Slitherin’

And this is why I keep photographing odd, gnarled stuff in the woods–because oftentimes something wonderful… well… maybe not “wonderful,” but something at least interesting happens.

I took this photo with nothing specific in mind. Later, cropping it to make it look its best, I suddenly saw the snake’s head… then realized that the rest of the structure strongly suggested a long, intertwining body.

I had no idea this was here–even though it seems obvious now, looking back at the original. I went back into the woods to check: As usual, it looks more like a snakehead and less like an ordinary protuberance only if you stand in the right place.

On the other hand, I’m discovering that I seem to see things other people don’t. (Someone said to me playfully, “you’re just now discovering that?”) So you may have to look a while to see the snake.

Anyway, here’s another remarkable, little unexpected discovery from an unlikely place.
