a yellow jack on the corner

Back off, Jack!

Meet an alien, armored soldier guarding his turf. Insects look alien close up anyway, but here:

  • metal walls and floor,
  • no sign of terrestrial plant life, and
  • in the distance, nebulous, rectangular shapes against the sky.

After photographing something else, I turned to see this sentry staring at me calmly. We met on the far corner of an abandoned parking garage, so he doesn’t get many visitors. (I was not concerned, since it is not late summer, when yellow jackets will attack trespassers, but I didn’t linger long after a second emerged to assist.)

What the camera saw:
back off, jack! as shotThis gives you more context and doubles as a bystander photo. It’s the base of a lamp post. And those are just bricks against the concrete floor in the background, not alien buildings rising from the fog into the sky (in case you were wondering).

I don’t set out to photograph critters, but won’t let chance meetings like this one go to waste–hence, the new category, “Chance Critters.” (I have a growing collection.)
