a crowd of the lobed leaves of the bloodroot

Woodland Bloodroot

Although the leaves are different enough to draw attention, there is something calming about the patterns.

What the camera saw:
woodland bloodroot, as shot

Delicate bloodroot flowers open in the spring before the leaves unfurl. They remind me of anemone, which do the same thing. I was surprised to learn that the species is considered “at risk.” There are certainly plenty of them where these grow. This was just one of the many colonies found in these woods.
