Cliff Dwellings

Walking along that pavement on a sunny afternoon, your attention focused on the dwellings of these ingenious and tenacious people, you could almost forget where you were. Almost.

They had called these rugged heights home for as long as they could remember and had no more fear of falling than you would of tripping over the curb. But there was no curb. No rail. Not even a useless yellow line between me and that cold, black emptiness.

They smiled kindly and pitied me, but I could never get used to its threatening presence. I maintained my dignity just fine within easy reach of the walls.
